Over the August bank holiday weekend, The SSE Arena in Wembley played host to Dance Afrique Summer Fest which treated London to a pantheon of African super-stars who put on a vibrant display showcasing the very best of African music, dance, and fashion from across the continent.
BBC 1xtra’s DJ Edu and NATV’s Dblackbuddha were on hand to mingle with the acts and soak up the pulsating atmosphere. With a diverse medley of artists and acts on show, there was ample opportunity to catch up with some of the performers who brought the party to life, including Vicky Sola who gave a shout out to DJ Edu who she labeled as an “amazing DJ” when our man spoke to her on behalf of NATV.
The festival included a host of big names such as Ghana’s Atumpan, Yemi Alade, Mafikizolo, and Silvastone who promised “It’s gunna be fun”, with a knowing smile, when he linked up with Dblackbuddha backstage. And indeed it was. As the night reached its crescendo with the range of musical styles and mind-blowing dance routines demonstrating the very best of Africa in all its wonderful variety, mega-star Akon, the man everybody had been waiting for, took to the stage to reel off his classic hits to the crowd’s delight. After Akon shut the stage down in style, DJ Edu summed up the night: “This is what happens when Africa comes together and puts on a show – no one wants to go home!”
